Story

I grew up in a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada. The population was about 150 in town. There were many more, much more population living on farms that considered the town part of their life. I was part of the farm life. We lived in a farm about four miles from town. I was born in 1936 and lived in that community till I was in my late teens when I finished school. School was another situation. There were no such thing as buses.

Us farm kids used horses to get to school. I was the firstborn in our family. So I got to school by riding a horse. A few years later, my sister came along. At that time, we resorted to horse and buggy. And in the wintertime, it was horse and caboose because it was very cold in the winter. It sometimes got down to 40 below. So the caboose had a little place where you could start a wood stove inside so you could start a fire.

All the small towns in Saskatchewan were fairly self-sufficient. Most of them had a restaurant, hotel, food store, sometimes two food stores, mechanics, service station. And could get all the necessary things to survive well. In fact, some of my classmates in all their years of school never got more than 60 miles away from the town.
